Thermal Labels

Thermal labels print without ink or toner — the image is formed by heat alone. That makes them the standard choice for despatch, picking, weighing and barcode work, where a fast, clean and consistent print matters most.

There are two thermal technologies, and choosing between them is the main decision:

  • Direct thermal labels use a heat-sensitive facestock and need no ribbon. They suit shorter-life applications — despatch, courier and warehouse labels that are read within days or weeks.
  • Thermal transfer labels are printed using a thermal transfer ribbon, which melts a hard coating onto the label. They last considerably longer and stand up to handling, sunlight and cold.

If a label must survive months rather than days, or will be handled repeatedly, thermal transfer is usually the right answer. For everyday despatch, direct thermal is simpler and there is no ribbon to load. Where labels are scuffed in transit, top coated direct thermal labels add a protective surface layer, and coloured direct thermal labels are available for routing and sortation.

CDM Labels manufactures both types at our own site in Hull, East Yorkshire, and has supplied self-adhesive labels since 2006. Rolls are produced on 'A' grade materials in the widths, lengths and core sizes that desktop and industrial thermal printers take, including the 4 x 6in despatch label. Tell us your printer and application and we will confirm the right material.
